Tiles for home and why they matter!

It is nice to select good tiles for home because it gives a good look to rooms. Here are a few tips about tiles.


With the various options available in the market, it’s a big and a real challenge to choose the correct tile for the right place. Popular tiles which are available in the market include Somany Ceramics, Kajaria Tiles, Nitco, Johnson Tiles, and Asian Granito. There are thousands of options in various categories for both wall and floor tiles. They are called vitrified tiles, ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles, cement tiles, quartz, stone, and even glass tiles available. It is really a big challenge for decision-making for the selection of tiles.

1. Basics of tiles for home

The first step is to decide what kind of tile you need. For flooring, Vitrified tiles are the best choice since they are durable and can also withstand any circumstances. For walls, you can choose either ceramic or porcelain tiles as they are non-porous in nature and also they do not absorb stains. For outdoors it’s best to choose either matte finish or anti-skid tiles to avoid falls.

2. Sizes

According to Structural engineers, large format tiles give a more spacious look. However, it is always advised to match tiles to the size of the room. If the room is small, and you use large size tiles on the floor, then the room will smaller look. For such a room, it is advised to go for medium format size tiles like 250×350 mm. Also, it’s a good idea to choose a size that can give a minimal amount of cutting and wastage

3. Right finish

Nowadays with digital printing, it is now possible to recreate any pattern on a tile. Anyways, the pattern and design should not be the only factor to decide. It is always important to identify the right finish as well. Glossy tiles give a great look on walls, while stone finish tiles are good for exteriors. For bedrooms, wooden finishes are always recommended since they extend a warm feel while for bathroom and kitchen walls we can always go with metallics and mosaics in combination with plain tiles. In living rooms, natural finishes and designs opt while for restaurants it’s recommended to look for anti-skid, high resistance vitrified tiles with a pattern or a design.

4. The right color

For flooring, it is recommended to for light colors to create a good look indoors. For outdoors we can experiment with darker colors. Light colors give a spacious look and for dark colors its maintenance is easy.

5. Plan

It is always good to buy an additional 5-10% more tiles than your requirement. This takes care of cuts and breakages. Some companies will give discounts on used or cut tiles, find out and grab the opportunity

6. Find it right

While there is always a trend to use contrast grouting at some point, it is always advisable for using a grout that matches the color of your tile. The main focus will be on having thin grout lines.

7. Mix and match tiles for home

While a single tile laid over an entire surface gives a spacious feel, it’s a very good idea to go with 2-3 tiles to lend a good space. On floors, it is recommended to go with borders and a combination of two complementary tiles. For walls, one can use up to three tiles to give a different and interesting décor. We can always mix and match mosaic tiles with medium format tiles, metallic tiles with plain ones, play with patterns on one wall and use plain tiles on the rest and even use contrasting colors for a unique pattern. Most tile manufacturers sell tile concepts that are pre-set combinations.

8. Water absorption
